In the United States, 1 in 10 individuals has diabetes, which affects how the body processes food into energy. One potential therapy is a once-weekly injectable dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide receptor agonist (GLP-1) that aims to control blood sugar. Injected under the skin, GLP-1 and GIP receptors cause the pancreas to release insulin and block the hormone glucagon, limiting blood sugar spikes after a meal. Additionally, it slows digestion, resulting in individuals remaining full longer and eating less. Thus far, late phase III clinical trials reveal that the treatment significantly reduces hemoglobin A1C in type 2 diabetes and supports weight loss, making it potentially the most effective therapy for diabetes and obesity yet developed.

Diabetes and Alcohol: Bad Combination

Diabetes and alcohol don’t mix. Here’s why.

Today we’re going to talk about diabetes and alcohol and why they are a bad combo. All it takes is a small amount of alcohol to really throw off your blood sugars in a big way. Sugary wine, cocktails, margaritas, or beer can especially have an effect on your blood sugar levels.

If you’re a prediabetic, alcohol could push you faster into becoming a diabetic. Alcohol affects the cells of the pancreas, and you can lose the function of insulin. If there is a loss of function of insulin, there’s no more regulation of blood sugars. This can cause your blood sugar levels to go up.

Alcohol can also deplete the body of vitamin B1. Vitamin B1 is important to help prevent lactic acidosis, which can occur if you’re a diabetic. One of the potential side effects of Metformin is a vitamin B1 deficiency. Lactic acidosis is a risk factor of Metformin. The higher the sugars (from your blood sugars or from the diet), the more vitamin B1 you may need.

Alcohol can also be created from GMO corn, rice, GMO beet sugar, or other grains.

When you drink alcohol, the stored sugar (glycogen) in your liver will not be as available to you. This could mean that you’re going to need more medication because your blood sugars will not be as regulated. You could also lose the ability to detoxify alcohol if you’re a diabetic. As far as the pancreas, you could have increased or decreased insulin.

A few things you could do:
1. Avoid alcohol
2. Only drink alcohol with meals (if you can’t avoid it altogether)
3. Avoid sugary drinks
4. Take vitamin B1 (nutritional yeast)
5. Try kombucha tea instead as an alternative to alcohol

Is it safe to consume alcohol if you suffer from diabetes?

1) The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism recommends limiting the daily intake of alcohol to 2 or 1 units a day. That’s the equivalent of 6 ounces of beer, or just 0.85 ounces of spirits.

2) CYP2E1 is an enzyme which collects in the liver and also works to break down alcohol. CYP2E1 is more active in diabetics than non-diabetics, which might help explain why liver disease and diabetes are so strongly linked.

3) During alcohol metabolism, the liver, pancreas, and brain cells utilize extra oxygen. So that means that the more you drink, the less oxygen there will be for other cell functions, and this can result in tissue damage, especially in the liver. Plus, a pancreas damaged by alcohol will produce less insulin, and when coupled with chronic insulin resistance, that smaller quantity of insulin will have even less of an effect.

4) Beer is high in liquid carbs, and many brands of beer can contain 15, and in some cases up to 20 grams of carbohydrates per drink. And since liquid sugar contains no fiber, drinking carb-heavy alcoholic beverages, especially on an empty stomach, can cause glucose levels to spike.

5) Drinking alcohol in conjunction with diabetic medications may have an opposite effect, potentially dropping your blood sugar too low. As alcohol gets processed and metabolized in the liver, where diabetic medications are also processed, drinking while taking these medications can put significant strain on your liver, which can then lead to a dangerous drop in glucose levels.

6) If there is an alcoholic beverages that exhibits clear health benefits, it’s red wine. Red wine is a good source of antioxidant polyphenols, including CATECHINS, EPICATECHINS, and RESVERATROL, which have been shown to protect the linings of blood vessels. They also work to halt the growth of certain types of cancer, aid skin health, lower stress levels, increase levels of probiotic gut bacteria, decrease LDL cholesterol, and reduce the risk of heart disease in general.

7) Red wine contains trace amounts of iron and calcium, which can each work to lower blood pressure. In fact, a recent trial showed that red wine extract helped improve both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive participants. A separate study showed moderate red wine intake may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes for both men and women, while other studies have even found that a small amount of red wine may work to reduce post-meal glucose levels while improving insulin sensitivity.

8) Switching from a higher to moderate alcoholic consumption can reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 30%. Diabetics are 50% more likely to suffer from mild to severe non-alcoholic fatty liver disease than non-diabetics, and having fatty liver disease raises the risk of becoming diabetic.

How There Could Finally Be A Cure For Diabetes

Diabetes No Comments »

Over the past 20 years, significant advancements in stem cell research and therapies have been one of the most promising methods of creating new insulin making cells needed to cure type 1 diabetes.

Vertex Pharmaceuticals, a biotech company, recently began a clinical trial where it plans to treat 17 participants who have type 1 diabetes with new stem cell derived insulin making cells. The first patient in the trial has had positive results.

Other companies around the world including ViaCyte and CRISPR, as well as Novo Nordisk, one of the biggest insulin manufacturers in the world, are also working on curing the disease. CNBC explores why finding a cure for diabetes is so hard and just how close Vertex and other companies are to solving this problem.

How There Could Finally Be A Cure For Diabetes

An implantable, bioartificial pancreas at the University of Arizona Health Sciences may soon provide a new treatment option for adults and children with Type 1 diabetes.

For the approximately 1.6 million people who live with Type 1 diabetes, insulin is a lifeline. Without it, the body can go into shock, resulting in organ damage, swelling in the brain and even death. Currently, the only way for a person with Type 1 diabetes to get this life-saving insulin is by regularly measuring their blood sugar levels with a self-administered blood test and then giving themselves necessary injections, or by using an insulin pump, an external device that delivers insulin as needed through a tube placed under the skin.

A UArizona Health Sciences research team led by Klearchos Papas, PhD, a professor at the UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson, is closing in on a better solution. Dr. Papas is developing a tiny implantable device that mimics the normal function of the pancreas, the organ responsible for insulin production.

Dr. Papas’ solution comes in the form of an oxygen-enabled implantable pouch packed with islets that are separated and protected from the body’s immune system. The device differs from an insulin pump in that it will closely mimic a normal pancreas and offer more durable, timely and accurate glucose sensing and insulin.

“The beauty of our approach is that instead of having to inject yourself with insulin, you have cells producing it on demand and releasing it as needed,” said Dr. Papas. “You essentially replace the physiological function of insulin production as close to what you had with your original pancreas.”
